Ryan Mills
Making the jump from amateur to pro-level competition is far tougher than you might imagine. Doing so requires a leap that requires both courage and faith. Amsoil Chaparral Honda rider Ryan Mills found that out last year, his first full year of riding the AMA 125 East Region Supercross and National series. "It was definitely a big step up in the level of competition," Mills says, "and it was a little more nerve-wracking at that level. There's so much more pressure. And on the starting line, you're next to National champions. It was definitely tough going out there and doing that for the first time." It might have been tough as a pro, but Mills owns an extensive riding and racing background. "My dad got me into racing BMX, and that's what got me into motocross," says Ryan, who grew up in New York. "One year he got me a bike, when I was 6, and that's what's helped me get where I am now." Parental support can mean everything to an aspiring young racer, and Mills was fortunate. "My parents have supported me in anything I've wanted to do since I was little," he says. "Everybody's got my back now; my sponsors, my girlfriend, my parents and my family. They've been supporting me for a long time, and it's great." Mills rose through the ranks, earning a couple of podium positions at the Loretta Lynn's Amateur Motocross Championships in 2000 and 2001. Just the same, last season was a learning year for Mills. For a rookie, he had some good results, with a ninth-place overall finish in the 125 East Region Supercross series, and a fifth-place overall finish at the 2003 U.S. Open 125 Supercross. "Last year had its ups and downs," Mills says. "I definitely learned
a lot. That's basically what this past year was, a big learning
experience." "I like Supercross better, because I like to flow, I like the technical sections that separate the good riders from the great ones. In Supercross you have to be really consistent. You've got to be able to do 15, 20 laps, with no mistakes, every lap the same. You've got to be on top of your game to win, too, because everyone else is trying to do the same thing." Mills also enjoys-and takes full advantage of-riding with proven champions. "It's awesome to ride with guys such as Ricky Carmichael, Mike LaRocco and Kevin Windham. It's such a good experience because they're always trying to help me too." Mills has the proper work ethic to be a champion as well. He works with a personal trainer, either one-on-one, or uploading data from his heart rate monitor so his trainer can adjust Mills' program. "Every night I'm in the gym," he says, "always training. And before the season started I spent every day out at the track, riding with the guys, and getting my work done. I mean, the more work you put in during the week, the easier the weekend is. "This year I just want to come in strong and be up there, you know? I definitely want to be in the top five in the overall Supercross standings, I'd like to get on the podium every race, and I'd even like to win one. For outdoors, I definitely want to be in the top 10 overall, and I want to be inside the top five or on the podium every weekend." With his ability to learn quickly, and his work ethic, Ryan Mills should achieve those goals easily. Then it's just a matter of time before he's battling for championships, and not just race wins.
